Driving around Genoa Airport

When you leave the airport you’ll find yourself on the SS1 dual carriageway. This road hugs the coast and makes a good alternative to the motorway. The nearest motorway to the airport is the A10, which is a four minute drive away. The A10 is part of European route E80, which goes all the way from the west coast of Portugal to the eastern border of Turkey. You can use the road to cross Luguria or to head west into France.

Genoa

The birthplace of Christopher Columbus is a gritty port packed with beautiful buildings and a rich history.

It takes about 20 minutes to drive to Genoa from the airport. Downtown Genoa is covered by a ZTL zone, which means non-residents aren’t allowed to drive or park there. There is on-street parking just outside the border of the ZTL zone. There’s no time limit on parking, and charge hours are between 8am-8pm Monday to Sunday. It costs €2.50 (about £1.84) per hour to park. There are also plenty of car parks: these charge anything from €1.50 (about £1.10) to €3 (about £2.20) per hour.

Portofino

Luxurious Portofino has been drawing the rich and famous for hundreds of years. High-end boutiques dot the winding streets, millionaire’s yachts crowd the harbour, and swish wine bars offer the perfect place to watch the world go by.

It takes just under 50 minutes to drive to Portofino from Genoa Airport. The centre of Portofino is a ZTL zone where only residents are allowed to drive and park. There’s a large car park at Piazza Martiri della Liberta, but it’s quite expensive at €5 (about £3.68) per hour. Free parking is available a little further out of town, but you will need to catch a bus or walk the two miles into the centre.

Alassio

Halfway between Genoa and Nice, Alassio boasts a beautiful old town and one of the best city beaches in Italy.

It takes just over an hour to drive to Alassio from Genoa Airport. Car parking is available around the town, but you do have to pay. Most of the hotels in Alassio have car parking for guests.
