The best way to explore a country is to visit places that are near and dear to the people, their culture and history; the places that they actually visit themselves.
In this article, we’ve put together some travel gems of Qatar that locals are proud to share with travellers. From secluded beaches to manmade oases, there’s plenty to see and do outside Doha.
In partnership with:

1. Zekreet Beach, perfect for kitesurfing
Found on the west coast of Qatar, Zekreet is one of the country’s most secluded beaches. It’s quieter than many others but it’s by no means isolated.
Zekreet Beach itself boasts breathtaking views, including a large inlet with shallow waters that makes this beach a kitesurfing hotspot. The beach also offers a rare glimpse of local wildlife. Oryxes (a large antelope), ostriches, gazelles and flamingos can be spotted here, along with flocks of migratory birds.
Zekreet Beach is located roughly 90km west of Doha. You can drive from Zekreet village to the beach on a short off-road drive that’s doable both in a 4×4 and in an ordinary car.
2. Purple Island, a haven for nature lovers
Looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life? Purple Island is a stunning natural wonder that will easily fulfil your longing. This island is found in the Al Khor region, which is around a 45-minute drive from Doha.
Purple Island gets its name from a major purple dye production site that used to sit on the island, but the island itself is actually pretty green. Known for its lush flora, exotic fauna and breathtaking sunsets, the island is perfect for a family day trip.
Here, nature lovers of all ages can enjoy spotting fish, crabs, fossils and other forms of wildlife while taking a stroll along the salt marshes. Travellers can also kayak or hike around Purple Island, and camping is allowed too, offering an unforgettable experience.
It’s worth noting that it also goes by the names of Al Khor Island and Jazirat bin Ghanim, which may be used by some maps and drivers.

3. Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas, and other beach-side resorts
If you’re looking for accommodation that has it all, book a few nights at the Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas. Set on 3.5km of pristine (and private) beach, this resort has something for all the family: spas, pools (and pool bars), a range of different restaurants and, for younger guests, an adventure-filled waterpark.
Found in the southwest coast, Salwa Beach resort offers three accommodation types: rooms/suites, villas and an Arabian village.
Alternatively you may also check out Simaisma A Murwab Resort, Zulal Wellness Resort, and Sealine Beach A Murwab Resort for a wonderful beach-side stay in Qatar.
4. Azerbaijani Beach, a picture perfect landscape
Few people know about Azerbaijani Beach, which is equally as beautiful, less crowded and just a stone’s throw away from the popular Fuwairit Beach in the north of Qatar.
Azerbaijani Beach stands out for its serene surroundings, pristine sands and azure waters. The beach is also rock-free so it’s a great option for kids. This beach is roughly an hour’s drive north from Doha and because it faces east, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy watching the sunrise.
5. Abandoned fishing villages, a look into the past
Located 130km from Doha, the abandoned villages of Al Arish and Al Jumail were once home to pioneer settlers in Qatar, and visiting them gives a good impression of traditional building techniques. For example, houses were built right on the shore since the first locals were fishermen and pearl divers. The walls of these houses were pretty thick too, to keep the heat out.
As you wander around the abandoned ruins, look out for the mosque at the heart of each village. Afterwards, relax on the beach for a truly cinematic sunset experience. The names of the villages also give a clue of what to expect: Al Arish relates to the abundant palm trees in the region and Al Jumail comes from the word ‘beautiful’.
