In the center of Virginia, the state's fifth largest city is home to one of the most iconic venues of the Civil War, Appomattox Courthouse. This is the very site of the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse and is the place where General Robert E Lee surrendered and effectively ended the war. The city itself has an ever expanding restaurant and nightlife scene.
