A cool little town filled with great shops and restaurants. Ely has its own unique vibe with lots of live music, festivals and a rich local art scene.
Ely is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area or BWCA. I've canoed up that way twice in my life and would love to do it again (portages and all). Ely was once named "Que Quam Chep", which means "land of the berries" in the Chippewa language. The population is around 3500 and is also located in the Vermilion Iron Range, and was historically home to several Iron ore mines. As you might guess, Ely's main street is lined with outfitters, outdoor clothing stores, and restaurants. When coming back in from a trip into the BWCA, any of the restaurants are great, especially after a week of packed provisions and slightly cool water.
One of our favorite places to get into nature. Loved the camping, the city is full of interesting little shops and the people are friendly.
Greatest place on earth
