The Tamil heartland of Jaffna and the surrounding Jaffna Peninsula were only recently reclaimed from the 30-year civil war that kept it closed and off-limits to visitors while on-again-off-again fighting raged around it. Now stably open to foreigners for the first time in three decades, the war-ravaged but proud town in the far north is a must-visit for anyone seeking to see and understand the realities of the Sri Lankan Civil War. With warm and profoundly friendly people, and a sleepy feeling that belies the bullet scars pocking buildings all over town, it's a fascinating place, and one that you go to not for sightseeing, but simply to bear witness. Meeting the people that live here, you can only hope that the peace and prosperity of this long-beleaguered town continue to grow.
