It is hard to understand why Vilnius has remained such a well kept secret for so long. The enchanting Lithuanian capital is breath-taking, with delicate church spires that pierce the blue sky, picture perfect streets and so much baroque architecture that UNESCO have declared it the largest Old Town in Europe.

Due to the undiscovered nature of the city, Vilnius hotels are very reasonable in price. For something a little different stay in the Dormus Maria Guest House, a stunning building that was once the Old Town Monastery with an atmosphere that money can’t buy. The Narutis Hotel is a five star hotel with its own pool and spa for the ultimate in relaxation while the Shakespeare's Boutique Hotel is set in a beautiful 17th century building in the heart of the city. Cheap and cheerful, the City Gate has rooms for budget travellers and is located in the old town close to markets, cafés and restaurants.

Grab flights to Vilnius and meander the medieval alleys and squares on foot, stopping in tucked away cafés and cosy bars, before moving on to visit the Old Town that was once a Jewish ghetto. Hire a car in Vilnius and visit the beautiful Gedimina Castle and Vilnius Cathedral. The statue of Frank Zappa confirms Vilnius' place as an individualist and bohemian city that revels in its oddities.

Arts centres, galleries, museums, ballet, concerts and theatre ensure Vilnius is a thriving cultural capital. With a rich culinary tradition, sample dumplings, stews and beer in some unusual places like a restaurant in the catacombs.

Full of writers, poets, free thinkers and revolutionaries, Vilnius holds it's own in Europe as a quirky, eccentric but truly unique city. It won't remain undiscovered for long!

Vilnius has one of the biggest old city centre in Europe. Around lots of green and the bohemian district of Uzupis highlight a pleasant medium sized town. Unfortunately in winter can get really cold

My impression of Vilnius after a few days was good. As the capital of Lithuania with about half million inhabitants, it's got a unhurried vibe. It's not crowded with tourists, because there are only a few sites to see. But that shouldn't stop you from visiting this beautiful city with nice architecture. Don't forget to visit the Republic of Uzupis, across the river, which is the city's Bohemian district of artists. The pubs of Vilnius along with its beer gardens are a fun and inexpensive way to get a taste of the local culture and delicious Lithuanian beers.

Vilnius was a pretty cool capital city. Although a long way from the airport into which we flew (Ryanair), it was definitely worth the trip. There is a ton of culture here sprinkled among the residual Communist architecture. Everyone with whom we interacted was very nice and helpful. If you're into fossilized amber, I got the impression that this was the place to pick it up.

Unfortunately I can't write a rave review of Vilnius. I took a trip through the Baltic States - Vilnius to Riga to Tallinn and Vilnius was by far my lease favorite. Teh sites weren't as impressive, the people weren't as helpful and the food was just okay. If you are heading to Vilnius, I don't think too much time is necessary.
