Hotels in Argostoli

Kefalonia is one of the largest Greek islands. Beautiful scenery, friendly people, and delicious cuisine have sealed its reputation as a fabulous summer holiday destination. Despite its popularity, the island still has an unspoiled atmosphere. There are lush forests and peaceful villages to discover; when you’re not basking on the golden sands of the beautiful beaches.

The rugged beauty of Kefalonia will be familiar to anyone who has watched the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which was filmed in the port town of Sami on the east of the island. The natural scenery is a top reason for visiting. Walking holidays in Kefalonia are becoming more popular, as are holidays designed around visiting the island’s excellent vineyards.

Kefalonia is peppered with villages and towns, and most of them have accommodation options. When you’re searching for hotels it’s worth thinking about which ones you’d like to visit, and which one you’d prefer to stay in.

Most of the accommodation in Kefalonia can be found in Argostoli, the island’s capital. There’s plenty of tourist infrastructure here, with great shopping and lots of dining options. The nightlife in Kefalonia is very low key, but if you’re happy going out for dinner and a few glasses of local wine you’ll have a fab time.

If you want to get out of Argostoli, head to the village of Assos. It’s one of the few places on Kefalonia where you can see traditional Venetian architecture, as it didn’t suffer as much damage during the 1953 earthquake as the rest of the island. The resort town of Fiscardo also has some original architecture, and is a popular tourist destination with plenty of hotels and restaurants.

Another popular destination is the Aghia Efimia. There’s plenty of low-key nightlife: the picturesque harbour is lined with tavernas, offering excellent views across to the island of Ithaka. Beach lovers will love Kato Katelios. The town’s own sand and shingle beach may not be that great, but you can hire boats and head out to explore some of Kefalonia’s more inaccessible beaches.

Whether you’re visiting Kefalonia on a family holiday or on a romantic break, you’re sure to find plenty to keep you entertained.
