Kiruna is the northernmost town in Sweden, and the biggest settlement in Swedish Lapland. It’s a popular tourist destination thanks to the famous Icehotel, thriving Sami culture, and the proximity to Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise. During early summer people flock to the town to see the midnight sun, while winter sports take precedence during the colder months. Great food, vibrant festivals, and access to the untamed wilderness make Kiruna a great place to visit all year round.

Airports in Kiruna

Kiruna Airport (KRN) is one of the six main airports serving Swedish Lapland, and is also Sweden’s northernmost airport. Its other claim to fame is its status as the hub of the Spaceport Sweden project, with hopes that it will become an additional base for Virgin Galactic in the future.

Airlines that fly to Kiruna

Jet2 offer seasonal charter flights direct to Kiruna from the UK. It’s also possible to fly in via Stockholm with Norwegian Air Shuttle or Scandinavian Airlines. 

Getting into Kiruna

Buses meet flights arriving from Stockholm at certain times of the year: usually from mid-December until the end of March, and again from the end of June until late September. It’s best to check the airport website to find out exact dates. One way tickets cost SEK 100* (just under £8.60) or SEK 50* (about £4.30) if you’re under 16. You pay on the bus, and it is cash only: so make sure you change your money before you leave.

Taxis are available outside the terminal building. If you’re going into Kiruna you should expect to pay around SEK 360* (about £30.85) for a private taxi, or SEK 160* (roughly £13.70) for a shared taxi. If you would rather get around independently you can rent a car at the airport from Hertz, Europcar, Avis or Sixt.
