1. Mingle with masterpieces at the Louvre Museum
Address: Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris, France
Opening hours: 9 am-6 pm usually; 9 am to 9:45 pm Friday, closed Tuesday
Price with exclusive discount for Skyscanner readers: From £16.26*

This art gallery is so famous it hardly needs an introduction. The Louvre is home to some of the world’s most iconic masterpieces — including the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci — and has set the scene for music videos by The Carters and movies such as The Da Vinci Code. Enter the museum through its emblematic glass pyramid and explore three enormous wings filled with artworks spanning nearly 10,000 years of human history.
It would be impossible to see every piece in The Louvre during one visit. In fact, it’s predicted that it would take 200 days to see each of the museum’s 35,000 works of art. So, put together a plan of action before you visit. The Louvre website has a few recommendations for self-guided trails. Skip to the most famous pieces on the Louvre’s Masterpieces trail or follow in the footsteps of pop royalty with Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Louvre Highlights tour.

2. Join an eerie guided tour of Les Catacombes de Paris
Address: 1 Av. du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy, 75014 Paris, France
Opening hours: 9:45 am to 8:30 pm, closed Monday
Price with exclusive discount for Skyscanner readers: From £80.48

Beneath the ornate, tree-lined boulevards of Paris lies one of the city’s creepiest tourist attractions: the Catacombes. This labyrinth of tunnels is lined with over six million human skeletons, which is around three times the living population of Paris. The tunnels extend south from the ominously named Barrière d’Enfer — Gate of Hell — one of the former entrances to the city.
This super-spooky tourist attraction has been capturing macabre minds since the early 19th century, when aristocrats would hold concerts and parties in the bone-lined hallways. It’s since made its way to Hollywood, with the 2007 horror film Catacombs set inside the labyrinth. Probably best not to watch it until after your tour.

The tours are for small groups only – up to 14 visitors on weekends, and six on weekdays – so you’ll feel like the only people down there.
3. Start your trip on a high note at the Opéra Garnier
Address: Pl. de l’Opéra, 75009 Paris, France
Opening hours: 10 am to 5 pm, closed on days with afternoon performances
Price with exclusive discount for Skyscanner readers: From £11.38

Built by order of Napoleon, the Opéra Garnier (or Palais Garnier) is one of the most impressive things to see in Paris. Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve walked straight into the Belle Époque. Gilded statues, colourful ceiling murals and intricate pillars imbue each room with opulence. The auditorium is equally impressive. Plush velvet seats, gold-leaf accents and more than five floors of seats cater to up to 2,000 guests.
This incredible building was famously the setting for The Phantom of the Opera. Written by Gaston Leroux in 1910, and adapted into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1986, it tells the story of a disfigured musical genius who ‘haunts’ the Palais Garnier. His legend is kept alive by a golden plaque in box number five, named ‘Loge du Fantôme de l’Opéra’ (The Phantom of the Opera’s box).

5. Take in the City of Light from the Eiffel Tower
Where: Champ de Mars, 5 Av. Anatole France, 75007 Paris, France
Opening hours: 9:30 am-10:45 pm
Price with exclusive discount for Skyscanner readers: From £42.27

We couldn’t write about Paris tourist attractions without mentioning the Eiffel Tower. This iconic wrought-iron monument dominates the city’s skyline. After snapping some shots in front of it, climb up (or take the lift) to witness vistas of Paris from its highest viewpoint. There are multiple observation decks — the view is great from the second floor, but it’s also possible to go all the way to the top (if you have a head for heights and glass-walled lifts).
When night falls, the tower comes to life with a sparkling light show, shimmering for a full five minutes every hour throughout the evening. As one of the most-visited pay-to-enter monuments in the world, it’s definitely worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
