If you think Kotor is quite busy, try to get away to Perast. It can be reached by bus for just 1 euro. Here make sure you try some mussels and oysters from local farms. Or you can hire a bike in Kotor city center and bike to Perast yourself and stop wherever you want along the way, as the scenery is just magnificent.

This town situated dramatically on the Bay of Kotor (about a twenty five minute drive from Kotor town) is lovely. It actually is just one main street, but packed with a slew of Venetian styled architecture in the churches and palazzos. The view across the Bay of Kotor are two extremely picturesque little islands (often featured in Montenegro tourism brochures) known as St. George's Island and Our-Lady-of-the-Rock Island. Sit at one of the outdoor cafes and take in the view, very nice. This town in summer will probably get crazy with tourists, but often season, I found it magical.

Incredible view from this lovely, coastal town that sits right on the water with mountains looming in the background. A city that was used for some of the filming of Casino Royale with James Bond.

My guide book evocatively described this place as like someone broke off a chunk off Venice, floated it across the Adriatic and moored it here in the Bay of Kotor. This has to be the highlight of any visit to the region: think Lake Garda with a mix of Venetian and Baroque architecture. Perast itself is pretty tiny and easily explored in just a couple of hours. Many come here to catch a water taxi across to the island monastery but by foregoing an overnight stay you'd be missing out on getting the place to yourself after all the coaches have moved on. It's also one of the best preserved places in the region: there's alot of restoration going on at the moment, but all faithful to the character of the buildings. Can't recommend this place enough - really romantic and special.
