How to maximise hand luggage allowances and avoid Wizz Air baggage charges
Flying Wizz Air? Follow our tips to make sure you don’t get hit by any unexpected baggage fees at the airport…
1. Go hand luggage only
OK, so you’re certain you’ll be rocking those 3-inch heels on the streets of Barcelona, but considering you can take a ‘small’ cabin bag with Wizz Air for free (40×30×20 cm, or the equivalent of a small hold-all or shoulder bag), it might be worth scaling down your holiday wardrobe to fit in your hand luggage. You’ll have to pay up to £40 if you turn up at the boarding gate with a bigger bag, so cut out any unnecessary items with this handy guide to packing and fly lightweight. Your shoulders will thank you for it later.
2. Pay luggage fees in advance
If you find the smaller Wizz Air baggage allowance just too restricting, it’s much cheaper to sort out any fees in advance. You can take a ‘large’ cabin bag or wheeled trolley case (55×40×23) in your hand luggage for a fee if you pay online when you book your flight (as opposed to paying at the airport) or it’s free if you book using Wizz Priority. It’s worth noting that Wizz Air fees change depending on your bag’s weight and size, and if you’re travelling during high or low season.

That said, checked baggage can be as little as £16 if you purchase in advance. Measure and weigh your luggage with a home luggage gauge and plan what you need to pay.
3. Wear your luggage
You could always go down the Martin Lewis route, and save money by wearing anything you can’t fit in your cabin baggage. At a basic level, this means donning your coat, boots and scarf before you step on board; at the extreme end of the scale, you could always invest in a some wearable luggage, featuring secret pockets for anything from your wallet to your laptop. These baggage-jacket hybrids can be bulky and unappealing to say the least, so you won’t be swapping the airport runway for the catwalk anytime soon, but if you’re serious about beating the baggage fees, this might be the answer.
4. Join the Wizz Air discount club
Frequent flyer? Wizz Air’s discount club offers €5 off 20 kg and 32 kg checked baggage fees, as well as at least a €10 discount off every flight (valid on all fares from € 19.99). You’ll need to pay €39.99 a year for standard membership, and €69.99 a year for a group of up to six people, but as Wizz Air sits at the low-cost end of the budget airlines spectrum, you might find the savings balance in your favour.
5. Compare baggage allowances
A lot of airlines, including easyJet and Ryanair, allow you up to 55×35×23 cm or similar in your hand luggage for free, making Wizz Air one of the least generous in terms of cabin baggage. If the charges are adding up, simply shop around: we’ve compared the hand luggage restrictions for major European carriers in one table, so you can see at a glance who gives you more for your money.
