Discover Sibiu

Bohemian and historic, the city of Sibiu is the perfect base if you’re planning a trip to Romania’s fabled Transylvania region. Sibiu prides itself on being one of Romania’s most cultured cities, and you’ll find plenty of entertainment: from theatre performances and annual festivals to buskers strumming their guitars in the backstreets.

The city’s historic centre was given a makeover in 2006, just in time to celebrate Sibiu’s status as European Capital of Culture 2007. The medieval town is packed with excellent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. There’s plenty to see and do in and around Sibiu, whether you want to go hiking in the Romanian countryside or are more content relaxing with a meter of beer in Piata Mica (the small square). Whatever your reason for visiting, you’ll find it impossible not to fall in love with this charming city.

 

Airports in Sibiu

Sibiu International Airport (SBZ) has been serving the city since 1943. The airport has been heavily invested in, and from 2006 to 2008 underwent an extensive series of upgrades.

 

Airlines that fly to Sibiu

Wizz Air fly direct to Sibiu from London-Luton. Other airlines flying to Sibiu are Austrian Airlines, Blue Air, Lufthansa CityLine, and TAROM. Air Bucharest also offers seasonal charter flights between Sibiu and Antalya.

 

Getting into Sibiu

Bus lines 11, 112, 116, 117 and 118 connect the airport to the city. Tickets should cost around 4.50 Romanian lei (about 70p)*.  There’s also a taxi rank outside the airport: official cars display their price per km and license in the window.

Car hire is available at Sibiu Airport, too: perfect if you’re planning a lot of excursions around rural Transylvania. Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Enterprise all have a desk inside the airport.

When to fly to Sibiu

Sibiu is a great destination all year round. In spring the wildflowers of the surrounding countryside are in full bloom, while winter offers plenty of opportunities to head inside and sample the region’s hearty cuisine. Weather in the summer can get quite hot, so if you’re planning on a lot of sightseeing or hiking it might be better to visit in spring or autumn.
