Discover Damascus
Ancient, legendary, and full of religious significance, the city of Damascus is a must-visit during a trip to Syria. It lays claim to being the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, and the breathtaking walled city is packed with history and atmosphere. Biblical and Koranic sites are visible at every turn, from Straight Street where the Apostle Paul was baptised, to the imposing Umayyad Mosque: one of the oldest mosques in the world. It’s not all about history though. Damascus is highly cosmopolitan, with trendy hotels, boutiques, restaurants, and nightclubs to discover.
Airports in Damascus
Damascus International Airport (DAM) was Syria’s busiest international airport, but has seen a drop off in traffic since 2011 when the Syrian Civil War broke out. The airport has remained resolutely open, although has faced intermittent closures and disruptions.
Airlines that fly to Damascus
Many international airlines have suspended flights to Damascus due to the Syrian Civil War; however it’s still possible to fly indirect from the UK with Emirates and Iran Air.
Getting into Damascus
Buses run between the airport and Baramkeh bus station in the city centre. The fare costs around 45 Syrian Pounds (about 15p) with an additional 25 Syrian Pounds* (less than 10p) for your luggage. Buses depart the airport every half hour, and are available 24 hours a day.
Only official taxi companies are allowed to bring passengers from the airport to Damascus city. The fare from the airport to the city is quite high, at 1500 Syrian Pounds* (about £5.15) although it can cost as little as 500 Syrian Pounds* (roughly £1.70) to get from the city back to the airport.

When to fly to Damascus
The most popular times of year to visit Damascus are spring and autumn. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with scorching hot summers and cold wet winters. From March to May and September to November the weather is far milder, making it easier to explore the atmospheric old town on foot and do some serious sightseeing. Temperatures tend to hover around the mid-twenties Celsius, so you can enjoy some sunshine during your trip and even catch a tan.
