FAQs about visiting Belem

Belém is a safe destination for travellers, but like any large city, it’s best to take precautions. Keep valuables out of sight, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps at night, and stick with well-lit, busy areas. Check with your hotel for advice before exploring unfamiliar neighbourhoods.
Belém’s dry season lasts from June to December. The rest of the year, heavy rains can hamper ferry crossings and outdoor activities. In October, millions of pilgrims take to the streets for Círio de Nazaré, a UNESCO-listed religious procession.
The Amazon rainforest is a bucket-list destination, but trips to Belém remain pleasantly affordable. Hotel prices spike around large events like Círio de Nazaré and Carnaval. Grab a cheap bite at popular street markets like Feira do Açaí.
Two or three days are enough to explore central Belém’s markets, museums and waterfront. Add extra time for island visits, whether that means tasting chocolate on Combú Island or relaxing at beach bars on Cotijuba.
Belém stands out for its Amazonian food culture, colonial architecture and riverfront setting. If you’re interested in regional cuisine, living traditions and access to rainforest landscapes, it offers an experience unlike that of Brazil’s coastal cities.
The Brazilian real (R$) is the official currency in Belém. Cards are widely accepted, though carrying some cash is useful for markets and smaller establishments.
Portuguese is the primary language, though it’s possible you’ll hear English from hotel staff and tour operators.
October is usually the warmest month, with average highs in the low 30s°C.
July is typically the coolest month. Expect average lows in the low 20s°C.
March is generally the wettest month. Rainfall can be heavy but often comes in intense bursts rather than all-day drizzle.
