Discover Wick
The town of Wick started life as a thriving Viking settlement, went on to become Europe’s busiest herring port, and remains one of the main population centres in Scotland’s far north-east. Wick makes an excellent base for exploring the regions of Caithness and Sutherland, where Norse heritage runs deep and dramatic scenery abounds. Ruined castles, rugged cliffs, and secluded beaches offer plenty to see and do, while friendly local bars provide lots of cosy places to enjoy a dram.
Airports in Wick
Wick Airport (WIC) is just over a mile north of the town, and also serves John O’Groats: the northern-most point on mainland Britain. The airport once played an important strategic role during WWII, and provided the launch point for the successful reconnaissance mission to find the German Bismarck battleship. Nowadays the airport is the main air travel hub for Caithness, and provides a much needed stopping point for light aircraft ferry flights travelling to North America via Iceland. The terminal has free Wi-Fi.
Airlines that fly to Wick
Eastern Airways fly to Wick from Aberdeen, and Flybe offer Loganair operated flights from Edinburgh.
Getting into Wick
Public transport is fairly scarce this far north, however two Stagecoach buses (82 and 182) stop at the airport and Wick en route to Thurso. Local taxi companies meet all scheduled flights, so if you want to catch a cab into town you’ll have no trouble. The journey should cost around £5* but it’s always a good idea to check with the driver before getting in the cab. Car hire is available via Europcar. It’s recommended that you book your vehicle in advance. As the airport is so close to the town, another option is to walk: it should take around half an hour.
