London Heathrow Airport

Passengers travelling on flights to Johannesburg should arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before the scheduled departure time of their flight. All airlines operating flights between London and Johannesburg have check-in desks at the airport, as well as online check-in facilities which is available in advance of your flight. South African Airlines also offer social check-in which uses your Facebook account.

There are four terminals at Heathrow Airport. South African Airways flights depart from Terminal 2, Virgin Atlantic flights depart from Terminal 3 and British Airways flights to Johannesburg depart from Terminal 5.

Each terminal at Heathrow Airport offers something a little different when it comes to shopping and dining. Shops include Boots, Dixons and World Duty Free for the essential airport purchases as well as Boss, Ralph Lauren, MAC, Ted Baker and Zara for both high street and designer fashion. Places to eat include cafes, bars and restaurants such as Eat, Caffe Nero, Strada, Yo! Sushi and Wondertree.

Johannesburg Airport

Johannesburg Airport, also known as OR Tambo Airport is located 21km northeast of the city Johannesburg. All flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg arrive into Terminal A, the international terminal.

The airport’s train station is located between the international and domestic terminals and provides fast connections to Johannesburg every 12 minutes on the Gautrain line. A single to Park, in the centre of Johannesburg will cost R152 and take 20 minutes with a change at Sandton station.

Taxis are available at Johannesburg Airport; to book an accredited taxi you must go to the Airports Company South Africa desk in the arrivals terminal.

There are plenty of options when it comes to car hire at the airport, you will have car hire companies such as Avis, Europcar, First Car Rental, Hertz and Thrifty to choose from. You will find them in the parking garage opposite the terminal, a short walk away.
