Skyscanner recommends: Cool hotels in Vienna
There’s lots to be said for big, reliable, hotel chains, but sometimes we want a hotel that’s a little different. Quirky. Unique. Special. That’s where boutique hotels come in, and in Austria’s beautiful capital, there are plenty.

Hotel Motto

Mariahilf

Even in a city as stylish as Vienna, hotels don’t get much chicer than this. Sitting right in the centre of the shopping district, on Mariahilferstrasse, this 90-room hotel defines boutique luxury. Pushing a distinctly Parisian edge, it’s also got touches of East Asian and Scandinavian influence in both design and mentality. There might be leopards on the lobby wallpaper and art deco touches for days, but it succeeds in creating a distinctive vibe without ever becoming gauche. Rooms are generously adorned with rich, patterned textiles. Frilled cushions, long-tasselled lampshades, Venetian mirrored walls and herringbone parquet floors create a sense of sophisticated cosiness.
The outdoor wellness area takes guests through yoga and meditation practices and a discreet sauna can seat up to four perspiring guests. Ornate garden chairs, tiny tables and frilled pagoda parasols fill the al fresco dining space, an extension of the Chez Bernard restaurant a level below. Draping foliage unites the two dining spaces, while the rooftop boasts an open grill and vineyard views. Downstairs, Chez Bernard delivers delicious French and Viennese-style dishes such as Tuna Crudo and Ratatouille Tarte. The hotel’s 1920s attitude is solidified by the generous ‘day drinking’ section on the breakfast menu.
Hotel Topazz Lamee

Innere Stadt

This pair of modern hotels face one another across Lichtensteg, a busy street in central Vienna. Both charming, both boutique, they offer guests pleasingly different experiences in up-market settings.
Outside, Hotel Topazz is a curved structure fitted with oddly placed oval apertures. Inside, monochrome palettes, geometric patterns and dark corridors dominate. Rooms are sumptuous, with textiles softening the hard outlines of the striking interior design. Elongated porthole windows with cushioned seats stream light into snug rooms, while Salon Topazz (where breakfast and a bar menu is served) allows diners to eat in the comfort of deep upholstered chairs. Just opposite, Hotel Lamee houses a popular restaurant – Bloom – which invites diners to relax on a rooftop terrace with views over the city and St Stephen’s Cathedral. It too is a modernist marvel. Inspired by Hedy Lamar, the famous Hollywood actress of the 1930s, rooms here are decorated in gold, pinks and floral-patterned carpets.
Both properties are a short walk from some of Vienna’s main attractions, including the Mozart House Museum, Hofburg and the Vienna State Opera. Exploring further afield is easy too; Schwedenplatz Station is 400 metres away.
The Hoxton Vienna

Landstraße

The Hoxton opened the doors of its 16th property this Spring in Vienna’s design hub: the 3rd district. Reinventing the building which previously housed the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, The Hoxton Vienna’s exterior is distinctly 1950s. In classic ‘Hox’ style, rooms range from ‘shoebox’ to ‘roomy’ and have photography and art from the 1950s. Geometrically-patterned curtains, wooden trims and plump velvet headboards finesse the retro-chic look the brand is aiming for.
It’s the communal spaces which truly make it one of the coolest hotels in Viennna, namely the Caribbean-themed rooftop bar Cayo Coco. Inspired by Cuba’s golden age of travel, this sky-high space is somewhere for guests to recline while savouring a supersized rum punch and admiring 360-degree views of the city and Austrian Alps beyond. There’s also a pool for taking a dip between drinks, and a snacks and sandwiches menu for the peckish. Highlights include the crispy coconut shrimp, cassava cheese fritter and chocolate churros.
True to its mid-century origins, the Hoxton also features an underground, speakeasy-style cocktail bar, Salon Paradise. Drinks to sip include Poet’s Dream No. 2, a blend of gin, melon and Fino Sherry, and Sal Paradise: Sekt sparkling wine with tartaric acid and tangerine sorbet.
Sans Souci Wien

Neubau

The Sans Souci Wien is a little bit of luxury in the heart of Vienna. Rubbing shoulders with the Museum Quarter and the shopping opportunities of the 7th district, this boutique property (which is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts) is perfectly placed. The building has guesthouse origins as far back as its construction in 1873. The current owners have taken care to maintain its historic adornments during its modernisation. The 63 rooms are delicately designed by Yoo Design Studio and Philip Starck, bringing a light and airy feel to the spaces with an edge of fall-into-bed cosiness. Natural tones dominate the furnishings which occasionally nod to its Victorian era foundations.
In the lower levels, a generous spa offers guests another way to luxuriate. A 20-metre long pool lounges beneath an arched, egg-white ceiling interspersed with chandelier-style lighting, while a sauna, steam room and heady mix of treatments await on exit.
Keeping to their USP, dining here is equally decadent. Breakfast is served in style in Veranda Restaurant, and comes with a glass of Laurent Perrier Champagne. For late starters, the ‘Veranda Breakfast’ runs from 10.30-2pm on weekends and public holidays. Elsewhere, Le Bar continues the brand’s champagne serving obsession, boasting over 100 varieties of the tipple. Meanwhile the Veranda restaurant takes care of guests’ dining needs throughout the day with a gourmet Austrian menu. Using primarily locally sourced ingredients, Chef de Cuisine Stephen Luksch serves up such delicacies as white asparagus in reisling broth, austrian prawn skewer and glazed chicken hearts.
Small Luxury Hotel Altstadt Vienna

Neubau

Fully embracing the essence of ‘boutique’, this hotel in the 7th district has 62 individually curated rooms conceptualised by different fashion designers, artists and architects. Whether it’s walnut-hued walls paired with coffee-coloured rugs, or textured wallpaper with rich, ruched curtains, every room offers guests a unique experience. Most are sympathetic to the artworks within, some of which are on loan from museums. Featured artists include Andy Warhol, Brigitte Kowanz and Gottfried Helnwein. The Otto Suite and Garden Suite are the only rooms with private roof terraces (sporting views over Vienna’s west side), though if space is what you’re after, book the 80-square metre Lena Hoschek Suite.
A small rooftop terrace supplies a neat ‘back garden’ environment. It’s another nice touch that lends the historic townhouse its homely feel (along with the many open fireplaces). The cosy Red Salon offers up a living room-style refuge, with the option to indulge sweet treats for afternoon tea, or wine, whiskey and more, late into the evening. There isn’t an on-site restaurant but a small bar menu is available in the salon throughout the day. As far as cool hotels in Vienna go, this is easily one of the best.
