Great place to hang out for a couple of days, the stunning vista with looming karsts dominate the eye and provide plenty to do for the budding adventure backpacker. Climbing, hiking riding and the ubiquitous 'tubing' (getting a large tyre and floating down the river punctuated by bars and drunken activities) all combine to make this a laid-back town and a great place to break the journey between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
Vang Vieng is an absolutely gorgeous place that caters for everyone from young backpackers looking for a wild time to couples seeking a romantic getaway to older travellers wanting some rest and relaxation. Vang Vieng has something for everyone so don't be put off by the towns party reputation.
This is a hotspot on the backpacker circuit. Tons of backpacker bars, restaurants and cheap places to stay. You can go tubing down the river, which is really fun!
As of April 2013 3 bars are now open along the river. Known locally as pirate bars, the owners and staff can ask you to leave at a moments notice if they suspect the police are on their way - i.e. the bars really shouldn't be open, but are. Even without the bars, tubing is still more than worth while. Its like a very scenic lazy river.
