Where to Stay in Akureyri

Akureyri attracts skiers from all over the world to enjoy its slopes. But the town also offers more, in the way of museums, a university, and stunning natural landscapes. The city birthed its own style of folk dancing, called "Vefarinn," which is one reason why the city holds so many music festivals throughout the year. The city is also home to one of the largest libraries in Iceland.

Akureyri Town Centre

The centre of Akureyri boasts a botanical garden, the Motorcycle Museum of Iceland and the Aviation Museum. It is also home to Nonnahús, the historic home of Jesuit priest and author Jón Sveinsson.

Akureyri Airport Hotels

Akureyri International Airport (AEY) is the airport serving Akureyri and the surrounding region. Hotels close to the airport make some of the most convenient last-minute hotels in Akureyri. There are two hotels found here if you prefer not to stay at one of the cluster of hotels in the town centre. One of these hotels is located south of the airport and one is located north of the airport on the way into town.

Hotel Kjarnalundur is located south of the airport where routes 821 and 831 meet at Kjarnaskogur Forest. It's one of the standard cheap hotels in Akureyri, offering simple rooms and a lounge and dining area. The grounds feature hiking trails, children's playground equipment, and volleyball courts, as well as a mountain biking track and walking paths that are plowed for skiers in the winter.

2. Saeluhus Apartments and Houses

Saeluhus Apartments and Houses is the first hotel you come upon on driving north from the airport into Akureyri proper. Offering individual houses and apartments as accommodations, it's more of a boutique hotel in Akureyri for those seeking greater autonomy and a more comfortable atmosphere.
