Batumi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia, and is the perfect place to get to grips with local culture. The people are friendly, the restaurants are great, and the nightlife is excellent. Batumi became a glamorous tourist destination at the end of the 19th Century. While tourism briefly halted during the Soviet period, Batumi has since bounced back to become the top summer destination in the Caucasus.

One of the best things to do in Batumi is to relax on the wonderful Black Sea beaches. Water sports are on offer if you feel like getting active, while family fun can be found at the Aqua Park. There’s also a Dolphinarium and a large aquarium. The lovely botanical gardens are also worth a stroll on a sunny day.

Batumi’s excellent nightlife includes rooftop cocktail bars, cosy pubs, and massive nightclubs where international DJ’s play to sold out crowds. The city also offers plenty of restaurants serving up Georgian and international cuisine. While you’re in Batumi you should definitely try the local dish of acharuli khachapuri: flatbread topped with cheese and an egg.

If you get bored of the beach you can always head inside and enjoy one of the city’s interesting museums. The Ajara State Art Museum displays work by local and international artists, the Batumi Archeological Museum showcases the region’s historic finds, while the Nobel Brothers Batumi Technological Musuem shows the economic developments of the city over time.
