Hotels in Vancouver

Vancouver may be famous for its stunning natural beauty, but the metropolis is more than a pretty face. World class shopping, a throbbing nightlife, fantastic restaurants and a groovy arts scene: it’s easy to see why The New York Times has described Vancouver as ‘Manhattan with Mountains.’ With great beach life in the summer, and snow sports in the winter, you’ll find plenty to do in Vancouver whichever time of year you visit.

When you’re looking for hotels in Vancouver it’s a good idea to think about which part of the city you’d rather stay in. Vancouver is a huge city, with plenty of interesting neighbourhoods to explore. The following areas have plenty of hotels, and plenty of character.

The City Centre

Hotels in the city centre are perfect for travellers who love being in the heart of the action. Most of the nightlife can be found in the Granville Entertainment District, while the best shops can be found in the area around Robson Street. The city centre is the main public transport hub of Vancouver, so it’s the perfect base for discovering the rest of the city as well as getting out into the mountains.

The West End

The perfect place to hang out on a warm summer day, Vancouver’s West End is home to Stanley Park and a string of excellent beaches. It’s a good place to base yourself if you’re travelling with kids, as Stanley Park boasts a huge aquarium, a miniature railway, and lots of pretty walking trails. You can take kayaking tours in the bay, or hire a bicycle for a ride around the Seawall.

The oldest part of Vancouver simple oozes old world charm: the architecture looks more European than Canadian. The cobbled streets and Victorian buildings host their share of souvenir shops, making it a popular spot on the tourist trail. Slightly off the tourist trail, you’ll find a cache of stylish boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and trendy bistros. There are lots of cheap hotels and hostels in Gastown and neighbouring Chinatown, so it’s a great pick for travellers on a budget.

The hippest neighbourhood in Vancouver was once a rough and ready industrial zone. Now the warehouses have been transformed into pavement cafes, art galleries, and chic boutique hotels. There’s a lot going on here, with a vibrant alternative nightlife to discover and plenty of fashionable design stores to browse.
