Hotels in Phnom Penh

If you’re planning a holiday in Cambodia, the vibrant capital Phnom Penh is a good place to start. It’s a great jumping off point for discovering the rest of the country, but also makes a great stand alone trip. It’s perfect if you’re looking for lively nightlife, sobering history, or the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture.

Hundreds of years ago Phnom Penh was known as the ‘Paris of the East’ and was considered to be the ‘Pearl of Asia’. Years of war, revolution, and tragedy have left their mark on the city; but by all accounts Phnom Penh is hard to keep down. Fresh investment and a strong sense of survival have helped Phnom Penh rise from the ashes to become one of the hippest cities in Asia.

Travellers love Phnom Penh because, unlike other Asian capitals, it’s kept most of its traditional charm. There are a few skyscrapers sneaking in, but modernity hasn’t managed to turn this city into a faceless metropolis quite yet. You’ll still see glittering palaces, bustling markets, and processions of monks wearing golden robes.

Although most visitors to Cambodia skip straight to Siem Reap, the tourist infrastructure in Phnom Penh is excellent. Over the past few years more hotels and restaurants have been opening their doors. Most of them can be found around the riverfront, a lively neighbourhood known for its nightlife. Western style coffee shops and bars can be found throughout the city, most people speak English, and most places have wi-fi so you can keep up with your social networks while you’re away.

When it comes to accommodation in Phnom Penh, there’s something for everyone. On the low-cost end of the scale the city boasts plenty of backpacker hostels as well as a few quirky ‘luxury’ hostels for the discerning budget traveller. There are plenty of five star spa hotels, too, for those who love to indulge themselves.
