Discover Portland
Thanks to the TV show Portlandia, the City of Roses has gained itself a reputation as one of the hippest cities in America. We reckon that reputation is well earned. The urban planning is eco-friendly, the music and arts scenes are buzzing, and the micro-breweries are plentiful. Despite being the largest city between San Francisco and Seattle, Portland has a wonderfully laid back attitude. There are plenty of green spaces to chill out in, and lots of trendy neighbourhoods to discover. Book flights to Portland today and find out what all the fuss is about.
Airports in Portland
Portland International Airport (PDX) is the largest airport in Oregon, handling 90% of the state’s air passenger traffic. The airport is home to a huge shopping mall and, because Portland has no sales tax, all of the items are duty free. The airport asks retailers to practice fair pricing, so restaurants and shops are unable to inflate their prices to a higher level than their in-town counterparts. As if that’s not enough, free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the terminal building.
Airlines that fly to Portland
There are no airlines currently flying direct from the UK to Portland. It’s possible to fly indirect with Virgin Atlantic, US Airways, Iberia, American Airlines, Flybe, Delta, British Airways, Aer Lingus and KLM.
Getting into Portland
The MAX light rail red line goes from the airport to downtown Portland. Tickets cost $2.50* (about £1.55), and this includes one transfer onto another train or bus if required. The journey takes half an hour.
Taxis are available outside the airport, with the average fare to downtown Portland costing around $30* (about £18.75). In American culture it’s polite to tip your driver 15%, so factor in $4.50* (about £2.80) on top of the fare.
If you’re planning on seeing a lot of Oregon during your trip, you can rent a car at the airport. Avis, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National all have offices on the airport grounds.
