Discover Port Of Spain

The capital of Trinidad & Tobago is a buzzing and friendly city famous for its lively carnival. The city sits on the northwest coast of Trinidad, and is a great place to discover island culture. The streets are peppered with stalls selling everything, from fruit and vegetables to clothing and CDs. Hang out with the locals in Independence Square, or get out of the city and explore the island’s gorgeous beaches and excellent clifftop hiking trails.

 

Airports in Port of Spain

Piarco Airport (POS) serves Port of Spain, and is also the only international airport on the island of Trinidad. The airport underwent major expansion in 2001, and is a major transit hub for travellers heading to the Southern Caribbean.

 

Airlines that fly to Port of Spain

British Airways and Caribbean Airlines both fly direct from the UK, with regular flights from London-Gatwick. Other airlines using the airport include American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, WestJet, Venezolana, Surinam Airways, LIAT, Insel Air, Copa Airlines, and Conviasa.

 

Getting into Port of Spain

The airport is 17 miles away from the city, but there are plenty of transport options to choose from. Public buses run from the airport every 15 minutes, starting from 7:15am until 8:15pm. There’s also a bus at 6:30am. One way tickets cost TTD 4* (about 45p)*.

Taxis are available 24 hours a day outside the airport. There are ten car hire agencies based at the airport too, great you prefer to have your own vehicle.  Agencies on site are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Econo, Exclusive, Kalloo’s Auto Rentals, Presto, Save-A-Lot, Singh’s Auto Rentals, and Thrifty.

When to fly to Port of Spain

The first half of the year is the best time to head to Port of Spain. Although the weather is pleasant all year round, at a balmy 26°C, there’s less rainfall from January to May. Another reason to visit at the beginning of the year is the famous Trinidad Carnival, which takes place in late February or early March (depending on when Shrove Tuesday falls). If you don’t mind afternoon rain showers, you can find great deals on flights and accommodation from June to December.
