Manaus is the capital of the Brazilian state Amazonas, and it became wealthy during the rubber boom. Known locally as “the Paris of the Tropics”, Manaus is famous for its decadent neo-classical buildings, river beaches, and duty free zone status. While it makes the perfect base for people who want to take a boat trip through the rainforest, it is also an interesting destination in its own right: offering culture, nightlife, and gastronomy.

Airports in Manaus

Eduardo Gomes International Airport (MAO) has been serving Manaus since 1976, when it took over from Ponta Pelada Airport. Originally the new airport was going to be named Supersonic Airport of Menaus, but a more conventional name was chosen instead by naming the airport after Air Marshall Eduardo Gomes.

The airport is fairly small with only one passenger terminal. Although the building doesn’t have free wi-fi, it does have an internet café. The departure lounge has a few duty free shops, a McDonalds, and a bar. The airport also has a 24 hour VIP Lounge in Terminal One if you like to travel in style.

When you arrive it’s worth visiting the tourist information desk in the arrivals hall as they have free maps of the city, information about Amazon tours, and can help you with your onward travel. The desk is open from 7am until 11pm.

Airlines that Fly to Manaus

American Airlines flies to Manaos from Miami. This is currently the only international flight route to Manaos, however it’s possible to transfer in another Brazilian city. Domestic flights to Manaos are operated by Azul Brazilian Airlines, Copa Airlines, GOL Transportes Aereos, MAP Linhas Aereas, TAM Linhas Aereas, and Total Linhas Aereas from a number of cities including Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, and Recife.

Getting into Manaus

The airport is 17km from the city, but there are a few reliable travel options to set you on your way. You can catch a taxi from the airport terminal at a fixed price: usually around R$58. It’s always worth confirming the price before setting off, as it can change depending on the time of day and the distance you’re travelling.

It’s also possible to take public transport. Bus line 306 goes from the airport to the Centro district for R$1.80, and takes roughly half an hour. Line 813 also goes from the airport, but offers a more expensive service as it is air conditioned. Both lines run 24 hours a day, but the service is less frequent at night.
