Airports in India

The sprawling international airports at Delhi and Mumbai are where most passengers travel to and from India, while Chennai Airport is the main gateway for the south. There are newer airports at Hyderabad and Bangalore which deal mainly with domestic flights and short-haul flights to the Middle East, although it’s worth checking the indirect routes from these smaller airports for cheaper long-haul deals.

Flagship carrier Air India operates a huge network of destinations in India, wider Asia and Europe. Budget airlines JetAirways and IndiGo connect cities across the vast Indian subcontinent, with fares low enough to rival India’s cheap, but very lengthy, bus and train travel. Delhi International Airport has one of the biggest ranges of destinations, including neighbouring countries Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and direct flights to Singapore, Australia and the UK. Backpackers save time on the road and take advantage of cheap domestic flights within India between popular tourist stops like Jaipur, Kolkata and Delhi – also the nearest major airport to the Taj Mahal in Agra.

You can save money by taking a stop-over route to destinations like Toronto in Canada and Chicago in the US, while flying from Chennai Airport is a good option for cheap fares to Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
