Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan but still manages to retain a small town charm. It is home to great art galleries, shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Popular attractions include the bustling Downtown Market, the Frederik Mejer Gardens and Sculpture Park, and a number of local craft breweries.

It’s a 20 minute drive from Grand Rapids Airport to Grand Rapids city centre. The most direct route takes route 11 and then route 96. The city is divided into quadrants – NW, NE, SW and SE – which are indicated after road names and can help with navigation. There is usually a good selection of free parking available outside the downtown area. If you’re parking in downtown, you’ll need to pay. However, the majority of spaces are free of charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends.

Saugatuck is a small town sitting on Kalamazoo River. It’s also just a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan. The town is part of the “Art Coast” of Michigan and there are a number of galleries and artists’ workshops to visit. Also in the area, there are plenty of outdoor adventure activities on the water and a few wineries which do tours and tastings.

Saugatuck is 45 minutes’ drive from Grand Rapids Airport, taking route 6 and then route 196 southwest. It’s a small place laid out over the grid system, with the lake as a useful reference point for navigation. There are plenty of parking spaces around town too.

Manistee sits between Lake Michigan and Manistee Lake. It’s a small town with Victorian features, beautiful beaches and some great fishing spots too. Visitors can wander around the quaint downtown or head to one of the town’s museums to learn more about its history. The Manistee National Forest is also nearby and guided tours can be arranged.

Manistee is around two hours’ drive from Grand Rapids Airport. Drivers should take route 11, route 96 and then route 31 north up the coast of Lake Michigan. All of Manistee’s east west streets are numbered and all its north south streets are named.
