Discover Turku
The oldest city in Finland, and the country’s first capital, Turku is a vibrant little city infused with culture and history. Turku is home to Finland’s second largest university, and the huge student population ensure that the city’s nightlife is always fun and thriving. There’s a good underground arts scene, plenty of fantastic festivals, and a range of historic buildings and interesting museums to explore.
Airports in Turku
Turku Airport (TKU) is Finland’s fourth busiest airport. It’s fairly small, but has everything you need before your flight. There’s a café serving coffee, fresh sandwiches, and sweet treats, as well as a souvenir shop selling local produce and souvenirs. The airport also has free Wi-Fi, so you can catch up on any important emails before boarding.
Airlines that fly to Turku
There are no direct flights from the UK to Turku. Airlines flying to Turku include airBaltic from Riga, Finnair (Flybe Nordic) from Helsinki, Nextjet from Mariehamm, Scandinavian Airlines from Stockholm and Kittila, and Wizz Air from Gdansk. There are also flights from Gran Canaria and Tenerife via Evelop Airlines, and seasonal flights from Alicante with Norwegian Air Shuttle.
Getting into Turku
Public bus line 1 connects the airport to the city. One way tickets are €4 (about £2.85)* and the journey takes around 15 minutes. There’s a taxi rank at the airport, too. If you’re travelling by taxi the journey will take just under ten minutes and should cost between €22 (around £15.60) and €26 (about £18.45)*.
Car hire is available at the airport through Avis, Europcar, Budget, Hertz, Scandia Rent, Sixt, and Toyota-Rent.

When to fly to Turku
Turku is known for its vibrant music festivals, so it’s always a good idea to try to plan your visit to coincide with one of them. During spring the city holds a big jazz festival, but most other events take place during the summer. Ruisrock is the oldest rock festival in Finland and takes place every July, as does the Turku Modern festival. Down by the Laituri takes place at the beginning of August and has lots of great bands playing around the city.
