Discover Ostrava

The ‘Steel Heart of the Republic’, Ostrava is an industrial city near the Polish border which is famous for its coal production. The city has plenty to offer leisure travellers as well as business travellers, and narrowly missed out on the title of European Capital of Culture 2015.

 Ostrava boasts great theatres, plays host to music festivals, and also has some fantastic museums and historical sites.  The Lower Area of Vítkovice, a former mining area, is included on the list of European Cultural Heritage. The nightlife in Ostrava is also excellent. The city is home to Stodolni Street: the longest stretch of bars in the Czech Republic.  There’s also a huge range of restaurants, covering local and international cuisines, and plenty of excellent shops and markets.

Leoš Janáček Airport Ostrava (OSR) serves the city of Ostrava. Since 2003 the airport has played host to the annual NATO Air Days in Ostrava military air show. The airport was expanded in 2006, with the addition of a new terminal.

Getting into Ostrava

Ostrava has warm summers and cold winters, with the best weather occurring from May until October. If you love music, July is the best time to visit as this is when the Colours of Ostrava world music festival takes place. Every second year the city also hosts the Ostrava Days of New Music festival, which celebrates modern classical music. The festival only takes place during years which end with an odd number: so 2015, 2017, 2019 etc.
