Forming two points of North Carolina’s Triangle (the third point is Chapel Hill), the cities of Raleigh and Durham have plenty of their own character and are both well worth a visit.
Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, was named America’s best city by BusinessWeek in 2011. This is down to the city’s varied nightlife, with lots of great restaurants and bars, as well as the excellent museums, university, and sport teams. Neighbouring Durham is known for being home to Duke University, with its unique gothic architecture. It’s also known for its art and culture, with plenty of great galleries and art walks taking place every third Friday.
Airports in Raleigh-Durham
Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU) serves the three towns of the Triangle, and handles over nine million passengers each year. Wi-Fi is available through a Boingo hotspot. The airport recently went through a huge expansion, with the new Terminal 2 opening in 2008 and the refurbished Terminal 1 reopening in 2014.

American Airlines fly direct from the UK to Raleigh-Durham. Getting into Raleigh and Durham
The airport is served by the Triangle Transit bus line 100. This takes passengers from the airport to the Regional Transit Centre, where you can find onward transportation to other towns and cities in the region. Line 100 goes into Raleigh: for Durham, switch at the transit centre onto bus line 700. Bus fare each way is $2.25* (about £1.45).
Taxis are also available at the airport. The journey price is determined by mileage, and the trip into Raleigh should cost $30.80* (just over £20). Taxi journeys into Durham should cost the same.
