Airports in Ankara

Ankara Esenboğa International Airport (ESB) sits 17 miles outside of the city. The airport was upgraded in 2007 with the opening of a new terminal building and a full renovation of the road leading into Ankara. The airport has a unique boast of being one of the airports chosen by NASA as a potential emergency landing site for their space shuttle. Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport at a fee, although it’s free to use if you book into one of the two lounges.

Airlines that fly to Ankara

Turkish Airlines is currently the only airline which flies direct to Ankara from the UK. Lufthansa, Pegasus Airlines, AtlasJet and British Airways offer indirect flights.

Getting into Ankara

Bus number 442 runs from the airport to the city centre, and a ticket costs 5.25 TL* (about £1.50). Taxis are available 24 hours a day outside domestic and international arrivals. There’s also a shuttle bus service into the centre of the city, although the famous HAVAŞ shuttles stopped running in September 2014 due to a contract dispute.

If you want to hire a car during your trip to Ankara, you’ll be spoiled for choice. There are five car hire companies based in the international arrivals hall (Payless, Eco Rent a Car, Div rent a Car, Thrify, and Garenta) and 11 providers in the domestic terminal (Sixt, Avis, Budget, Central, National, Europcar, Hertz, Payless, Rent Go, Garenta, and Almira Rent a Car).
