Glitzy modernity, colonial charm, and Mediterranean attitude combine in Uruguay’s captivating capital city of Montevideo. There are great beaches, fabulous terrace restaurants, and plenty of leafy parks. There’s plenty of cultural life to indulge in, with a vibrant live music scene and plenty in the way of theatres and art galleries. Montevideo sits right across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, and it often draws favourable comparisons with the Argentine capital. The southernmost capital in South America, Montevideo is a city well worth visiting.

Airports in Montevideo

Carrasco International Airport (MVD), or General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport, serves Montevideo and is Uruguay’s largest airport. Once known for being overcrowded and run-down, the airport underwent a multi-million dollar face-lift in 2009 and is now as modern and vibrant as the city which it serves. Note that due to the refurbishment, every traveller must now pay a $40 departure fee when flying from Montevideo. 

Airlines that fly to Montevideo

There are no direct flights from the UK to Montevideo. Air Europa, Air France, and Iberia all operate flights from Europe. Other airlines flying into Carrasco International Airport include Aerolineas Argentinas, Amaszonas, American Airlines, Avianca Peru, BQB Lineas Aereas, Copa Airlines, Gol Airlines, LAN Airlines, and TAM Airlines. 

Getting into Montevideo

Buses connect the airport with Terminal Tres Cruces, to the north of the downtown district and within walking distance of most major hotels. Buses cost UYU 42* (about £1.50) each way. Airport taxis are also available to the city centre, and should cost around UYU 1500* (about £53.55). It’s best to get an estimate from your taxi driver before setting off on your journey. Car hire is available at the airport from Avis, Budget, Hertz and Europcar.

When to fly to Montevideo

Montevideo has a pleasant climate all year round. There’s no chilly winter to contend with, and no rainy season.  The coldest the city gets is from June until August, when temperatures drop to a friendly 6 - 14°C. 

The end of January and beginning of February are a great time to visit Montevideo, as this is when the carnival is in full swing. The Desfile de Llamadas (the Calls Parade) takes place in the city’s southern neighbourhoods. Plenty of colourful floats and dancers line the route, accompanied by the beat of more than two thousand drums.
