Leon is full of history, and boasts plenty of religious significance too. It’s one of the largest cities on the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James) and is home to one of the most beautiful cathedrals Spain has to offer. Leon has plenty to offer culture vultures, with its excellent modern art museum and array of ancient monuments, but night owls will also find plenty to love in the city’s buzzing tapas bars and clubs.

Leon is a popular stopover for people travelling to the south of Spain and Portugal by ferry, but with flights to Leon you can enjoy a short break in the city without the hassle of a channel crossing.

 

Airports in Leon

Leon Airport (LEN) is a small domestic airport, just four miles outside of the city. It opened to commercial traffic in 1964, although the terminal and service building were not built until 1997. The airport was fully inaugurated in 1999, with a new runway added in 2007.

 

Airlines that fly to Leon

Currently the only airline offering flights to Leon is Iberia Regional (through Air Nostrum). They only offer flights to and from Barcelona at the moment.

 

Getting into Leon

There’s a taxi rank outside the airport. Expect to pay €20-25* (about £14.50-£18)* for the journey into the city centre. Public buses connect the airport to the city centre, with one way tickets costing €3* (about £2.20)*. You can also hire a car at the airport, which is best if you prefer to have your own mode of transport for exploring the city and its surroundings. Avis and Europcar both have a base within the terminal.

When to visit Leon

The weather is best for sightseeing during spring and autumn. It’s not too hot to wander around, and it’s not too cold either. Easter week (Semana Santa) is an important celebration which takes place during March or April. Watch religious processions through the city centre and enjoy stirring concerts and performances.
