Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

Flights to Sihanoukville depart from the domestic terminal of Siem Reap International Airport. This is a small terminal with just two gates in the departure hall. There's one shop after security: Artisans d'Angkor, which sells Cambodian souvenirs. If you're peckish there's a Blue Pumpkin cafe, where you can enjoy ice cream, fruit shakes and coffee as well as fresh sandwiches and cakes.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Sihanoukville Airport is very small. It's just over ten miles from the centre of town. There's no public bus between downtown and the airport, but motorbike taxis and tuk-tuks are available. The trip should cost around $12* (just under £8.50) but price does depend on how far you're going and how good your haggling skills are.

Practical Information

We recommend arriving at the airport at least one hour before your flight is scheduled to depart. There's no passport control on this route, as it is domestic, but British and other foreign travellers are usually asked to show their passport when checking in.

What to expect in Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is Cambodia's premier beach resort. The climate is similar to Siem Reap, with two seasons: dry and wet. Like Siem Reap the dry (and high) season falls from October to April, while the monsoons can come any time from May to September. The dry season is the most popular time to visit Sihanoukville. The sea is warm, the sun's always shining, and all of the tour companies are operating at full capacity. Like Siem Reap, the US dollar is the most widely used currency. The Cambodian riel is used for small change. Prices in Sihanoukville are slightly higher than in Siem Reap, but there are so many happy hour drink deals and lunchtime discounts that it's unlikely you'll ever need to pay full price.

Beware of the beach hawkers that ply the city's more popular beaches. They're very persistent, but stay firm and they will eventually take no for an answer. They can be unscrupulous: you'll soon find out that $2 foot massage is too good to be true as they tend to add extras like foot scrubs, and overcharge. Remember to ask them how much everything they try to add on will cost, and don't be afraid to say no. If you want to escape them for a day head to Victory Beach (it's a lot less touristic than Otres and Independence).
