Airlines that fly from Manchester to Sydney

There are no direct flights from Manchester to Sydney. However, a number of airlines, including Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and Singapore Airlines provide flights with just one stopover. Emirates flights stop in Dubai, Qatar flights stop in Doha, Etihad flights stop in Abu Dhabi and Singapore Airlines flights stop in Singapore.

Terminal Information

Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport has three terminals. Etihad and Emirates depart from Terminal 1 whilst Qatar and Singapore Airlines depart from Terminal 2. The airport advises passengers on long haul flights to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled flight departure time. However, the advice from airlines may vary so it’s worth double checking.

Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have all of the facilities you’ll need before your flight, with Terminal 1 offering the better shopping opportunities. There are high street shops and a variety of eateries in each terminal including Boots, World Duty Free, Giraffe and Frankie and Benny’s. Free Wi-Fi is available for up to one hour and the departures lounges are also home to currency exchange desks and duty free stores.

A premium lounge is available in each of the terminals. For a fee, payable in advance or on the day, you’ll get complimentary food, hot, cold and alcoholic drinks and a quiet lounge away from the hustle and bustle of the main departures hall.

Sydney International Airport

Sydney Airport (also known as Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport) is located eight kilometres south of Sydney city centre. There are three terminals at the airport. Flights from the UK arrive to the International Terminal.

In the arrivals hall you’ll find cash machines, currency exchange desks, information desks and a variety of shops and food outlets. There are also car rental desks for companies including Avis, Hertz, Budget, Redspot, Europcar and Thrifty. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal building. 

There are various options for your journey from Sydney Airport to the city centre. You’ll find the airport train station located at the northern end of the International Terminal. The Airport Link train takes just 13 minutes to reach the city and departs regularly throughout the day.

Local buses stop outside the terminal. You can also choose to take a shuttle bus which provides door to door transfers to your accommodation or local attractions. Tickets are available from the Travel Desk located in the arrivals lounge.

Taxis are also available outside the terminal building. A one way journey into Sydney city centre will cost around A$45 to A$55 including a A$4.10 airport surcharge.

Practical Information

British nationals travelling to Australia need to apply for a visa prior to travel. Two types of visa are available: a free eVisitor visa direct from the Department of Immigration & Border Protection or an Electronic Travel Authority visa (ETA) from your travel agent or airline, which costs A$20.00. Passengers aged 75 years or older may be asked to undergo a health check before a visa is issued. On arrival all passengers may be asked to show evidence of adequate funds for their journey and a return or onward ticket. 

What to Expect in Sydney

Sydney enjoys warm summers, mild winters and four distinct seasons. If you visit during the summer months of December to February, you can expect temperatures of around 27°c, whilst in the winter, temperatures drop to lows of 8°c.

Prices in Sydney are similar to those of Manchester. You can expect to pay A$80.00 (£40.00) for a mid-range three course meal for two, A$8.00 (£3.90) for a bottle of beer and A$4.00 (£1.95) for a one way journey on public transport. Taxi travel and supermarket shopping are also fairly similarly priced in the two cities.
