Qatar Airways’ hand luggage allowance

Cabin baggage rules and restrictions

The hand luggage allowance from Qatar Airways depends on your travel class and destination. If you’re flying in First Class or Business Class, you can bring up to two pieces of hand luggage weighing a combined 15kg or less.

If you’re travelling with Qatar Airways in Economy, you get one cabin bag up to 7kg. Size limits do apply with the maximum dimensions for any hand luggage bag set at 50 x 37 x 25cm.

You can also bring a personal item, like a handbag or briefcase, that fits under the seat in front. Just remember, a laptop bag doesn’t count as a personal item on Qatar Airways.

Hold luggage rules

As with hand luggage, the hold luggage you’re permitted to take onto your Qatar Airways flight depends on the class of your ticket and where you’re flying to/from.

For some destinations, the luggage allowance is done on both the number of bags and weight limit. For others, weight limit is the main consideration. Just remember that no individual hold luggage bag can weigh more than 32kg.

Understanding the rules on Qatar Airways

This is what you need to know

Laptops and laptop bags aren’t counted as a personal item on Qatar Airways flights, so you might be faced with an excess baggage fee if you bring them on separately. Your laptop and its bag should fit within your hand baggage allowance of 7kg. So, pack your computer or tablet inside your cabin bag, within the correct dimensions.

Sports equipment and musical instruments can be confusing, as different rules apply depending on the type of equipment you’re carrying. Generally, Qatar Airways accepts items like golf clubs, tennis rackets and fishing tackle as part of – not in addition to – your checked baggage allowance, providing they fit within the size and weight restrictions.

If you’re bringing bulkier items, like bicycles, they need to be packed in a closed box or bag and go in the hold. Special fees may apply (see the website for more details) if they exceed the baggage restrictions. You’re free to bring a musical instrument into the cabin – but you will need to buy your guitar/accordion/trombone a seat of its own if it’s too fragile to go in the overhead lockers or doesn’t fit within the hand luggage allowance.

Qatar Airways baggage FAQs

The number of luggage items you can check in with Qatar Airways depends on the class of your tickets and where you’re flying to/from. For example, if you’re flying economy to destinations other than Africa or the Americas, you’ll be permitted to check as many hold bags as you like as long as they don’t exceed the total weight limit. For flights to/from Africa or the Americas, you’ll be able to check one bag as an Economy Lite passenger, or two bags as an Economy Classic, Convenience, or Comfort passenger.

A laptop bag is considered hand luggage (but not a personal item) when you fly with Qatar Airways and must fit within the 50 x 37 x 25cm (20 x 15 x 10in) size restrictions. In addition to your laptop bag, you can take a personal item, such as a handbag.

There are a number of restrictions in place when it comes to taking liquids in your Qatar Airways hand luggage:

  • Liquids, gels, pastes, and aerosols must be in containers of 100ml (3.4oz) or less

  • Containers larger than 100ml cannot be accepted, even if they’re not full

  • All liquid containers must be stored in a single transparent, resealable bag no larger than 20 x 20cm (8 x 8in)

  • There are no restrictions on baby foods and medication

  • You may be required by airport security to present a prescription for medication in your hand luggage

Infants aged between 8 days and 2 years old are entitled to 10kg of checked luggage when flying to/from all destinations other than Africa and the Americas when they’re permitted one item of hold luggage up to 23kg in weight. Infants aren’t entitled to hand luggage. Children older than two require their own seat and have the same baggage allowance as adults.

Qatar Airways does all it can to ensure your luggage arrives at your destination safely. However, should your bags be damaged in transit, you should report this to the Qatar baggage services counter at the airport and get a reference number. You can then use this number to track updates via the airline’s tracking system. If you’ve already left the airport, you can report your damaged luggage online. All reports must be submitted within 7 days of baggage collection.
