Why spending abroad feels better with Monzo

UK residents only. Ts&Cs apply.

Pay abroad fee-free

Monzo passes Mastercard’s exchange rate directly on to you without extra charges, so you can say goodbye, adios, au revoir, and arrivederci to sneaky fees and extra charges.

Split and track running costs for group trips

Track how much everyone owes and settle up in seconds with Monzo Split. They'll even send the awkward reminders, so you won't end up paying for your pal's lobster and champagne when you only had chips.

See exchange rates in the app

Understand exactly what you're spending with real-time exchange rates in the app. No surprises when you check your bank balance, and no confusion about that coffee costing 400 rupees.

Free cash withdrawals

If Monzo's your main bank account, you can make unlimited fee-free withdrawals in the European Economic Area (EEA) and up to £200 every 30 days everywhere else. EEAsy as that.

Protect your money on the fly

Freeze your Monzo card from anywhere in a few taps if it goes missing, or unfreeze it if it turns up in the hotel safe. You can speak to Monzo 24/7 in-app if you're worried about security or have any questions.

Set money aside for your next trip

Put your holiday money into a Pot and keep it apart from your main balance. You can even hide or lock it so you don't spend it on takeaways before you leave.

Top tip

FAQs

To benefit from unlimited fee-free cash withdrawals in the EEA area, Monzo will need to be your main bank account. Monzo considers whether it is your main bank account if you meet certain criteria, such as if at least £500 has paid into your account over the last rolling 35-day period, you have an active Monzo Direct Debit over the same time period, or if you share a joint account with someone who meets the criteria. You can read more about the full criteria to qualify here.

No, you only need to let Monzo know if your card is lost or stolen while you're abroad. We advise you immediately freeze your card and contact Monzo's customer support team (both of which can be done in the Monzo app).

If Monzo is your main bank account, make unlimited fee-free cash withdrawals abroad in the European Economic Area (EEA), and up to £200 every 30 days for free outside the EEA. After that, Monzo will charge 3%. Find out more here.

When travellers spend money abroad, banks can sometimes add a mark-up fee to the exchange rate. This means that even though they do not technically charge a ‘fee’, you might not be getting the best possible rate. Monzo passes Mastercard’s exchange rate directly onto you, without sneaky fees or extra charges. You can also make free cash withdrawals up to a certain limit (see above).
