Discover Kharkiv

Ukraine’s second city is clean and pristine, packed with grand Soviet buildings, leafy parks, and powerful monuments. Located in the northeast of the country, Kharkov has a strong Soviet past. During the 1920’s the Ukranian Soviet government had their seat here, and during the 1960’s the city formed the hub of the Soviet defence industry. Today Kharkov is still an industrial powerhouse, and is less likely to attract leisure travellers than it is business people.

Kharkov might not be a mainstay on the tourist trail, but there’s plenty to see and do during a visit. Enjoy a trip on the Children’s Railway (a train route operated by kids), admire the UNESCO Heritage Mirror Stream fountain, or pay a visit to the huge Freedom Square: one of Europe’s largest.

Kharkov International Airport (HRK) is the city’s main airport. It has two terminals: a modern international terminal, built to comply with UEFA regulations in time for the Euro 2012 football tournament, and a neo-classical VIP terminal which was built during the 1950’s.
