Discover Curitiba
The bustling metropolis of Curitiba is the largest city in the South Region of Brazil, and has been praised by a number of organisations for its cleanliness, organisation, and safety. In 2010 the city was awarded the Globe Sustainable City Award, and according to Reader’s Digest it’s the best “Brazilian Big City” to live.
Many immigrants chose to settle in Curitiba during the 19th Century, and the city has commemorated them with parks and monuments dedicated to different ethnic groups. Italian Wood with its boisterous food festivals, German Wood with its replica buildings, and the peaceful Japan Square with its cherry trees and statues of Buddha are a few examples.
There’s always a lot to see and do in Curitiba, with a range of festivals, museums, and cultural events running throughout the year.
Airports in Curitiba
Curitiba is served by Afonso Pena international Airport (CWB), one of the busiest airports in Brazil. Over seven million passengers pass through its doors each year. The airport was originally built during World War II to help the allied effort during the war, and maintains the same runway layout today.
Currently the airport has two terminals, although one is strictly for cargo. The passenger terminal is well equipped for layovers. As well as having 60 stores, a number of restaurants, and a children’s play centre, it also boasts a small museum.

Getting into Curitiba
Afonso Pena International is 18km away from the city centre. Taxis are available outside the terminal 24 hours a day, and a journey down town costs around R$50. It’s worth speaking to the driver before getting in, as the price can vary depending on the time of day and the length of your journey. If you’re travelling on a budget, you can catch a city bus. These leave the airport every 20 to 30 minutes, and are very cheap. You can expect to pay R$2.60 on weekdays and R$1 on Sundays. There’s also an Airport Shuttle, which is faster, more comfortable, but more expensive than the city buses at R $8.
