Discover Anglesey

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have made Anglesey their home, and it’s easy to see why: it’s truly a destination fit for royalty. Secluded beaches, gorgeous coastline, pastoral villages and a huge concentration of ancient sites make Anglesey a popular destination for people holidaying in the British Isles. The island sits off the coast of North-Wales, and offers plenty of excellent ways to unwind. Fishing, surfing, and golfing are all popular ways to pass the time in Anglesey, as well as hiking through country parks and visiting beautiful castles.

Airports in Anglesey

Anglesey Airport (VLY), or Maes Awyr Mon in the local Welsh, is the main airport serving the island of Anglesey. The airport belongs to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, and is part of RAF Valley: a station where RAF pilots are trained to use BAE Hawks. It’s quicker to fly to Anglesey than use surface transportation, with an hour’s travel time from Cardiff.

Airlines that fly to Anglesey

Links Air is the only airline currently flying to Anglesey, offering twice-daily flights from Cardiff. In April 2015 the airline also began offering flights from Norwich, with a brief stop in Cardiff.

Getting to your destination

There’s a skeleton bus service on Anglesey which serves the airport on the Holyhead – Bangor – Holyhead line. The best way to get to your destination is either to book a taxi, or to pick up a hire car when you arrive at the airport. Having your own rental car makes it easier to get around and explore Anglesey, especially as many of the buses don’t run on Sundays or public holidays.

When to fly to Anglesey

There’s plenty going on in Anglesey at any time of the year. Like any British destination, the weather can be unpredictable. You’re not guaranteed great weather in the summer, but likewise it’s not guaranteed to be awful during the winter. Surfers will find that the waves are at their best during winter, while hikers and sightseers might like to take a chance on spring and summer when the weather is likely to be at its best.
