Discover Tripoli
Mediterranean meets the Middle East in Tripoli, Libya’s capital and most cosmopolitan city. Tripoli benefits from a gorgeous location on one of North Africa’s best natural harbours, right on the Mediterranean Sea. The city is infused with history, with Roman ruins and Ottoman mosques, and of course the iconic Assaraya al-Hamra (the Red Castle). There are bustling bazaars where you can practice your haggling skills, Excellent museums packed with ancient treasures, trendy nightspots that could rival clubs in Paris and Rome, as well as some excellent beaches within driving distance. Tripoli is definitely an interesting destination for a city break.
Airports in Tripoli
Tripoli International Airport (TIP) has been out of use since July 2014, when rebel groups occupied the building. Mitiga International Airport (MJI) is now currently the only international airport serving Tripoli. The airport was opened in 1995, and is just five miles east of Tripoli’s city centre. Since 2014 it has been subject to intermittent closures, and has been operating on a very limited basis.
Airlines that fly to Tripoli
There are no direct flights from the UK to Tripoli. Passenger airlines serving Mitiga International Airport include Libyan Airlines from Alexandria, Buraq Air from Istanbul, and Afriqiyah Airways from Istanbul, Casablanca, Niamey, and Khartoum. If you’re planning a trip to Tripoli you will need to stop in one of these cities.
Getting into Tripoli
Public transportation options from Mitiga International Airport are scarce, but it should be possible to find a taxi outside the airport. The journey time between the airport and downtown Tripoli is ten minutes.

When to fly to Tripoli
Tripoli has a subtropical climate, with hot summers and wet winters. The best time to visit Tripoli is from December until May, when the temperature is a lot cooler and you can really get out and enjoy your time in the city. It rains a bit in the winter. You could be lucky and visit during a dry week, or you could be unlucky and experience a few rainstorms. Always keep an eye on the weather forecast, and pack your umbrella to be on the safe side.
