Discover Simferopol
The capital of the Crimea and the region’s major travel hub, Simferopol tends to be a stopover city for people heading onwards to the coastal and mountain resorts. If you stick around you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied in Simferopol, especially if you’re interested in culture and history. The city boasts an impressive range of interesting museums and art galleries as well as a good range of restaurants. There are great markets, boutiques where you can sample Crimean wine, relaxing river walks along the Salhir, and ancient sites like the Scythian Neapolis.
Airports in Simferopol
Simferopol International Airport (SIP) has been serving the city since 1936. The airport has recently found itself at the heart of the Crimean crisis. In 2014, Russian militia took control of the airport. Since then, the majority of international flights have been cancelled: apart from flights going to or coming from Russia.
Airlines that fly to Simferopol
There are currently no direct flights to Simferopol from the UK. The only way to fly to Simferopol at the moment is to go via Russia. Scheduled flights from Russia are operated by Aeroflot, Grozny Avia, Metrojet, Orenair, Red Wings Airlines, RusLine, S7 Airlines, Ural Airlines, and Yamal Airlines. There are also various seasonal flights operated by Severstal, Saratov Airlines, Yakutia Airlines, Alrosa, Ikar, Kosmos Airlines, Nordavia, and Kostroma Avia.
Getting into Simferopol
There are plenty of buses connecting the airport with the city. Buses 115 and 98 both go direct to the city centre, as do trolleybus numbers 8 and 9. Bus 49 goes from the airport to the bus station, offering onward transportation if you’re heading straight for Crimea’s gorgeous coast or mountains. Buses and trolley buses from the airport cost 2 UAH* (about 5p).
Taxi drivers are also available at the airport. Agree on a fixed price before getting into the cab: on average you should expect to pay 60-80UAH* (about £1.50-1.95).

When to fly to Simferopol
The high season in the Crimea is July and August. This is when the weather is at its most pleasant, and when the beach resorts are at their best. New Year and May Day are also popular times to visit the region. You can get better flight deals during the low season, if you don’t mind chillier weather.
