Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) serves the island of Rarotonga, and is the main international air hub of the Cook Islands. Whether you’re planning to stay in Rarotonga or head off to one of the less explored islands, you will need to pass through this airport first.
Airlines that fly to Rarotonga
There are no direct flights to Rarotonga from the UK. Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia offer flights from airports in New Zealand, Australia and the USA while Air Rarotonga and Air Tahiti offer flights from nearby island airports including Papeete, Aitutaki, Atiu, Mauke, and Mangaia.
Getting to your destination
Public buses pass the airport every half hour, with the anti-clockwise bus stopping directly outside the airport and the clockwise bus stopping across the road at the RSA club. Single tickets are NZ $5* (about £2.50)*.
There’s a taxi rank at the arrivals area. Fares to the popular areas of Muri and Aroa should be no more than NZ $40 (about £20)* but it’s always wise to confirm prices with the taxi driver before you set off. If you prefer to have your own mode of transport, you can hire a car at the airport from Avis, Polynesian Rentals, or Island Car and Bike Hire.

When to fly to Rarotonga
Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are the best time to visit the Cook Islands, as temperatures soar to 29°C. You’re almost guaranteed sunshine and good weather. Winter (June to August) is a bit chillier, with highs of only 25°C, however it’s usually dry and really quite pleasant. The summer months, December to April, are the wettest with frequent showers and a risk of cyclones.
