Porto Alegre is known for its high quality of life, varied nightlife, and unique gaucho culture. It was once at the heart of Rio Grande do Sul’s revolution against Brazil, but now it’s one of the richest cities in Latin America and home to a number of well respected universities.

There’s plenty to see and do in Porto Alegre. You can admire the historic buildings around Cathedral Square, tickle your tastebuds with the region’s famous barbecue cuisine, watch the sunset over the Guaiba River, and join the in-crowd for drinks in the glamorous Moinhos de Vento neighbourhood.

Airports in Porto Alegre

Selgado Filho International Airport (POA) serves Porto Alegre, and is located a short 6km outside the city centre. It’s one of the busiest airports in Brazil. The airport was built in 2001 and is very modern; it was the first airport in Latin America to contain a shopping mall. The airport also has a cinema, a spa, and a good selection of quality restaurants. There’s no free wifi in the terminal, however there is an internet café where you can access the web for a small fee.

Getting into Porto Alegre

The airport has good public transport connections, with both rail and bus available. There’s also an array of car rental companies based at Selgado Filho. The Metro line connects downtown Porto Alegre with the airport and is highly efficient.

The Metro line ends at Mercado Publico, a short walk from the final metro stop.

The bus lines BO91 and B09 go from the airport to the city centre, where it’s possible to catch another public bus to your final destination or catch a city cab. Taxis are available 24 hours a day outside of both terminals. There are two types of taxi, the red city cabs which run on a meter, and the white airport cabs which run on a fixed rate. It’s always worth speaking to the driver and getting an estimated cost of journey before setting off.
