Discover Pune
Cultural, spiritual, and lively, it’s easy to see why Pune is one of India’s top tourist destinations. Pune is a city of contrasts, offering a heady mix of old and new, commercial and spiritual, chaos and peace. Speaking of peace, most people visit the city to spend some time at its most famous attraction: the Osho Ashram, which was founded by the renowned guru Rajneesh. There’s much more to see and do in Pune, if reaching nirvana isn’t your thing. You can choose from cultural visits to historic hill forts and interesting museums, or instead indulge in the buzzing nightlife fuelled by the city’s huge student and backpacker populations.
Airports in Pune
Pune Airport (PNQ) serves the city. In 2008 the airport was upgraded to the tune of INR 1 billion (about £108 million) with all of the mod cons you would expect from an international air hub. The airport has plenty of excellent facilities for travellers, including a spa. Despite the investment, there are currently plans in place to build a new airport due to the limited expansion options at the current site.
Airlines that fly to Pune
There are no direct flights from the UK to Pune. You can fly from Europe with Lufthansa via Frankfurt. Domestic flights from Indian airports are operated by AirAsia India, Air India, Air India Express, GoAir, IndiGo, Jagson Airlines, Jet Airways, JetKonnect, SpiceJet, and Vistara.
Getting into Pune
Auto rickshaws and taxis are widely available at the airport. You can expect to pay around INR 120* (about £1.30)* for an auto rickshaw and around INR 300* (roughly £3.25)* for a taxi. It’s always wise to get an estimate from the driver before setting off to avoid any nasty surprises. Car hire is also available at the airport, for those who prefer to have their own personal transport.

When to fly to Pune
The weather is most pleasant from September to April. The monsoon season lasts from June to September, and is quite a magical time to be in the city (if you don’t mind the rain). It provides a lovely respite from the heat: during the 19th Century the Bombay Presidency used the city as a base during these months. The summer in Pune can be very hot, with temperatures usually averaging 26-44°C from March to early June. May is the hottest month.
