French Polynesia’s capital (and largest) city, Papeete is the first stop for most travellers visiting Tahiti. The city is an administrative centre, and a good place to get a feel for typical life on the island. It’s a small city, easy to get around on foot, and has a lively port and a wonderful array of colourful marketplaces. There are lots of great shops, restaurants and bars to discover, but if you’re looking for luxury resorts and pristine beaches you’re better heading elsewhere on the island.

When to fly to Papeete
Tahiti benefits from gorgeous weather all year round, with temperatures rarely dropping below 20°C even in the coolest months. Winter (May-October) is generally considered the best time of year to visit, as it’s less humid and less rainy. This is the peak tourist season, so hotel rates can be quite high. Of course, Tahiti is a luxury destination so you might struggle to find cheap rooms even during the low season.
