One of West Africa’s main travel hubs, Dakar is a lively and intense city. There’s fantastic nightlife, beautiful beaches, and plenty of gorgeous colonial buildings. If you’re interested in history and culture, you’ll find plenty in Dakar. The Ile de Goree, where slaves were transported to the Americas, is well worth a visit as is the IFAN Museum of African Arts. The Renaissance Monument, which celebrates the end of European rule, is also a must see. It’s taller than the Statue of Liberty.

Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport (DKR) is the main international airport serving Dakar. The new and highly modern Blaise Diagne International Airport is set to open soon, and will take over much of the traffic.

Airlines that fly to Dakar

There are no direct flights from the UK to Dakar. Iberia, Turkish Airlines, Air France, and Brussels Airlines all fly to Dakar from the UK with one or more stops.

Getting into Dakar

There are a lot of touts in and around the airport: ignore them. The best idea is to arrange your airport transfers in advance.  If not, stay firm and head for the official taxi stand outside the terminal. The official airport rate is 3000 XOF (about £3.50)* by day, but the price can rise to 7000 XOF (about £8.20)* at night. Bus number 8 goes from the airport to the city centre, and costs 250 XOF (about 30p).*
