Discover Almaty

As Kazakhstan’s largest city and main travel hub, it’s likely you’ll pass through Almaty at least once during a trip to the country.  It’s well worth lingering. Almaty is a sophisticated and attractive city, with snow-capped mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. The leafy streets are home to glitzy shopping malls, pavement cafes, and excellent restaurants. If you want to get out of the city, the mountains aren’t far. During the summer there’s excellent hiking, and in winter you can go skiing. 

Airports in Almaty

Almaty International Airport (ALA) is Kazakhastan’s largest international airport. The airport is home to the longest runway in Central Asia. Plans are currently in place for a new international terminal complete with hotels, cinemas, and a shopping centre. 

Airlines that fly to Almaty

British Airways fly direct from the UK to Almaty. You can fly indirect, with one or more stops, using Turkish Airlines, Ukraine International, Pegasus Airlines, Transaero Airlines, KLM, Swiss, and Etihad Airways.  

Getting into Almaty

There are regular buses from the airport to the city centre. Tickets cost 80 Tenge (about 30p).*

Taxis are available at the rank outside the airport, or you can order a cab from the booth inside the terminal. Taxis from the rank are more expensive: expect to pay between 2000-3500 Tenge (about £7.25-£12.70)* for a journey into the city centre. It’s always wise to get a quote from your driver.
