La Paz is a breathtaking destination in more ways than one. Clinging precariously to the side of a huge canyon, with the snowy peak of Mt Illimani looming in the distance, the cityscape itself is completely awe inspiring. At more than ten thousand feet above sea level, it can easily lay claim to being the highest de-facto capital in the world: and the thinner air can easily leave you breathless, too. La Paz is a city bursting with rewards.

El Alto International Airport (LPB) is the world’s highest international airport, with an elevation of over 13 thousand feet. It’s important to remember that oxygen levels are low at this height. Try not to rush around the airport or you could find yourself feeling very light headed and out of breath.

The airport was officially opened in the 1960’s, and was fully modernised during 2006.The airport levies a departure fee of $25 (about £16.20)* for international flights, and BOB 15 (around £1.40)* for domestic flights.
