Airlines that fly from London to Sydney
British Airways and Qantas both offer flights to Sydney from London-Heathrow Airport. Indirect flights are also available through a number of airlines including Thai, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad and Air China.
Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
British Airways flights to Sydney depart from Terminal 5, while Qantas fly from Terminal 3. Double check your boarding card before travelling to the airport. Terminals 4 and 5 have their own stops on the train and tube. Some trains bypass Terminal 5 for Terminal 4, so check the train schedule before too. Terminal 5 is Heathrow's high-end terminal, complete with designer stores and a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. Terminal 3 also has its fair share of designer stores, including names such as Etro, Chanel, Gucci and Harrods. Terminal 3 has two executive lounges as well as a set of bedrooms for weary travellers with a long layover. Terminal 5 has an Aspire Lounge & Spa, perfect if you want to board the plane feeling extra refreshed.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Flights from London land at the International Terminal. The airport is well connected by public transport, taking less than 15 minutes to reach downtown Sydney by train and one-way tickets cost $17* (about £8.25). The station is located at the northern end of the terminal. There's a taxi rank outside each terminal, too: expect to pay about $45-55* (about£22-27) for a ride into the city. Car hire is available from Sydney Airport. Look out for the desks in the arrivals hall.
Practical Information
We recommend arriving at the airport at least two hours before your flight to Sydney is scheduled to depart. To enter Australia you will need a visa and a passport, valid for the duration of your stay. Electronic visas are available direct from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Be prepared to show that you have funds to support yourself during your stay, and to present your onward travel documents once you arrive in Australia. For work visas it's best to contact the Department of Immigration and Border Protection or visit the Australian embassy.
What to expect in Sydney
Sydney is 11 hours ahead of London and the currency is the Australian Dollar ($). Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are opposite of the UK.
